The Los Angeles Times reviews the Exploding Plastic Inevitable with an emphasis on the band. Nico is described as ‘deep voiced’

5th May 1966

The Pocono Record 5th also covered the night.

7th May 1966

The UK’s Daily Mirror has a full spread on New York threats to ‘Swingin’ London’, including The Velvet Underground. “Underground movie genius Andy Warhol and his guitar group, “The Velvet Underground” have formed a roadshow nightclub called “Erupting Plastic Inevitable.” It would though be San Fransisco, a year later that would unseat London.

8th May 1966

Chicago Tribune reports on Andy Warhol attending the CHicago Film Festival and bringing his band.

9th May 1966

London’s Evening Times has an article about the band performing. The reporter seems quite taken by what they saw!

11th May 1966 – KFWB/98 Radio Report on Velvet Underground.

19th May 1966

The Los Angeles Times reports on the closing of ‘The Trip’, with The Velbvet Underground being the final act.

22nd May 1966

San Francisco Chronicle has an advert for the Exploding Plastic Inevitable.

23rd May 1966

San Francisco Chronicle has a more in depth preview.

May 25th 1966

The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Bill Graham’s Fillmore West police problems, with a mention of the Velvet Underground playing.

A 1980 Sterling Morrison interview touched upon the band’s relationship with Bill Graham ‘We were never separate from Andy. We didn’t have to do it any more. We built the light show in the Fillmore West. Which is why Bill Graham hates us to this day. I could tell Bill Graham stories… I hate him. He’s one of the people I really hate. Bob Dylan I hate.’

May 27th 1966

The San Francisco Chronicle again had a mention of the band playing at the Fillmore.

30th May 1966

The San Francisco Chronicle had a review of the night – “Some otherwise conservative San Franciscans happily – if somewhat self consciously – threw aside their traditional restraint last weekend in honor of Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable.

The paper had a further and less flattering article on the night, elsewhere.

The San Francisco Examiner, on the same day had another somewhat less than flattering review of the night.
